Why A Wireless Technology Headphone Could Sharply Shorten Your Lifespan
When cordless/mobile phones first rolled up in the late 1990s, it was monumental, and it indeed took a bit of time for Ugandans here to come to terms with this idea that you could talk to someone far away without needing a wire to connect the ends.
Anyway, scientists have never let up. Their
obsession had since been to completely do away with wires and, of course, where
there’s a will there’s always a way.
In the 21st Century, we can ably listen to
music or radio, for that matter, without any wires from the radio to the
speakers. This is possible with the new technology of cordless
headphones that has invaded our space. The question now is with how it all
works.
According to Peter Peak, an ICT expert in Mukono, wireless
headphones are headphones that connect to a device, such as a smartphone,
stereo speaker, television, computer, or other electronic devices without using
a wire or cable.
As a matter of fact, wireless headphones are now
used by millions of people every day for work, interaction or entertainment.
For example, wireless headphones are popular with people who work at call
centers; for it frees you to move around without having to worry about cords/wires.
People doing a workout at the gym or in front of their TV in the living room
love the freedom of wireless headphones. They are also perfect for people who
want to watch late-night television without disturbing others.
How Wireless
Headphones Work
Wireless headphones work by connecting, or pairing,
with the device you want to use, through a radio or electromagneticsignal. Many
devices use Bluetooth technology to make connecting easier for the user.
Devices with Bluetooth technology can connect and exchange data over very short
distances using radio transmissions. Headphones with Bluetooth also let you
connect to multiple devices simultaneously.
A product with Bluetooth technology has a tiny
computer chip inside that contains the Bluetooth radio, and software that makes
connectivity between devices possible. So when Bluetooth-enabled products, such
as a cell phone and headphones, are in close proximity to each other, they
connect, or pair. This enables you to talk on the phone or listen to music
without wires.
Connecting a wireless headphone differs depending on
the device you are using, but it’s easy once you know how.
Advantage Of The
Wireless Technology
Cordless headphones operate in the same basic way
regular headphones do, except that they have a built-in radio frequency
receiver. This eliminates the wire necessary to plug your headphones into a
computer or other piece of electronic equipment. As opposed to being forced to
stay within a certain distance from an audio source, with cordless headphones
you're free to walk around within range of the transmitter. Cordless headphones
are also ideal when traveling. You can use them with any audio device that has
a standard-size headphone jack. This allows you to plug your cordless
headphones into any device you find.
How Signal Is
TransmittedTo The Headphones
Cordless headphones come with two distinct and
necessary pieces of equipment: the headphones themselves and the radio
transmitter. The transmitter plugs into the headphone jack of a piece of audio
equipment. It converts the audio signal output into a radio frequency, and then
transmits it over the air.
Cordless headphones may be battery-operated or
rechargeable. They have a radio receiver built into the base. This picks up the
signal emitted by the radio transmitter and converts that signal from a radio
frequency back into audio information. That audio information then plays over
the headphone speakers just as it would with regular headphones. Cordless
headphones essentially operate in the same way as a set of wireless home
theater speakers.
Health Hazards
All is well that ends well, they say. The wireless
technology is very new and it is really impossible to claim that all is well
yet. It instead poses serious health threats, because of the complexities of
the technology used in it.
Peter Peak emphasizes that most of the wireless
headphones use the Bluetooth technology. Bluetooth is wireless technology that
is employed for exchanging data over short distances. Which basically means
it’s a wireless system. This means that to achieve their purpose, Bluetooth
transmits electromagnetic waves at ratherhigh frequency levels.
Moreover, when you use a Bluetooth earpiece device
you’re exposing yourself to an additional source of radiation. This is so,
because your cell phone acts as a relay by emitting radiation between the cell
phone tower and your correspondent. When you add Bluetooth into the equation
your cell phone also emits another form of radiation, Bluetooth radiation,
between your cell phone and your Bluetooth earpiece.
Your radiation exposure with a Bluetooth headset is
the sum of cell phone radiation plus Bluetooth radiation. So Bluetooth
radiation in itself may be less dangerous than cell phone radiation but when
you use a Bluetooth earpiece you are always exposing yourself to radiation from
both devices. In the long run, brain cells are damaged and adverse effects could
arise. As it is now, the most viable solution to this is to endeavor to limit
the amount of time that is spent with the wireless headphone.
